New Zealand Work Visas

New Zealand work visaIf you have a job offer from a New Zealand employer, you may be eligible for a work visa under the Essential Skills Work Policy which allows you to live and work temporarily in New Zealand.

Due to their temporary nature, work visas can generally be processed very quickly – which may be exactly what you need if you need to get to New Zealand if you have been offered your dream job! (To find out more about securing a job in New Zealand, check our Work and Income article.)

Your partner and children cannot be included in your work visa application – they will need to apply for their own visitor, student or work visas. Your partner will probably be eligible for a work permit once your visa has been approved.

Even for a temporary work visa, you need to meet health requirements, although you will only need to have a chest x-ray and medical certificate if you are applying to enter New Zealand for more than 12 months. You will also have to meet good character requirements, but will only need to get police certificates if you are applying to enter New Zealand for more than 2 years.

If your job is not on the Essential Skills in Demand list, the New Zealand Immigration Service will need to establish with your prospective employer that there are no New Zealanders who can fill the job. In either case, you will need to prove that you are suitably qualified and experienced to do the job.

Work visas are generally available for up to three years, and you will have to let the New Zealand Immigration Service know if you lose your job or intend to change employers.

If you wish to apply for permanent residence, you will need to apply under the Skilled Migrant, Investor, Family or Entrepreneur categories. If you are applying under the Skilled Migrant Category, you get extra points for work experience gained in New Zealand.
